JOURNAL
OF CULTURE COLLECTIONS |
JOURNAL OF CULTURE COLLECTIONS publishes research papers with original results in the field of collection and preservation of microbial and cell cultures and viruses. Different aspects of these topics will be interesting: taxonomic, biochemical and molecular biological investigations. Manuscripts of Bulgarian and foreign collections including subcollections of different scientific institutions are preferred.
The publisher of the Journal
of Culture Collections is the National Bank for Industrial Microorganisms
and Cell Cultures (NBIMCC), Sofia.
Founded in 1983 by the Government
of Republic of Bulgaria, NBIMCC is juristically independent research institute,
financed by the state budget. NBIMCC is a member of the World Federation
of Culture Collections and European Culture Collections Organization, recognized
by the World Intellectual Property Organization as Independent Depository
Institute, authorized to accept and safe-keep microbial specimens for the
purposes of patent procedures. Objects of collecting are bacteria and actinomycetes,
fungi, plasmid-bearing microorganisms, animal viruses and cell lines, plant
viruses. By the end of 1998 the specimens preserved were more than 3500
strains.
NBIMCC has been publishing
a bulletin in Bulgarian (20 issues), which included research papers and
information about the strains deposited for preservation, for 10 years.
A catalogue is also published by the NBIMCC.
Collecting activity is a
specific and narrow scientific area. Hundreds of collections world-wide
deal with similar scientific problems and publish in different journals.
This fact makes difficulties in gathering data about the collection, the
conservation and the preservation of microbiological objects. The accumulated
statistic information connected with different criteria which were followed
during the long-term conservation of the specimens is of great importance
for this kind of investigations. These data are useful for the specialized
research groups, but of limited interest for publication in series of scientific
journals. It is possible that optimal decisions regarding a certain problem
have been already found and meanwhile other collections to continue working
on them. In our opinion a possible alternative is to combine scientific
information of similar kind in a journal of Culture Collections which will
include research, research-applied materials, as well as papers of practical
importance. Their value could be evaluated namely by the narrow specialists
in collecting and preserving.
The NBIMCC researchers have
decided that it is worth to try to publish such a journal. Several papers
of the NBIMCC staff have been published in the first issues. We hope
that the specific thematic attracts authors working in other collections.
It would give us a great pleasure if the readers give their comments and
send to us research papers for publication in next issues.

Instructions to authors
1. Two clean copies of each
manuscript written in English only and typed on A4 paper, double-spaced
should be submitted.
2. Title in capital letters
should be clear and concise. Full author(s) names (including first name
and family name) should be written and the author to whom correspondence
is to be addressed should be indicated by asterisk, followed by the address
of the appropriate institution(s).
3. Manuscripts should include
a summary (not larger than 200 words) in English and Bulgarian (for Bulgarian
authors only), introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion,
literature cited. It is preferable to present "Materials and Methods" with
subtitles. "Results and Discussion" may be combined or not in order to
obtain better interpretation of the experimental data. Reviews are also
published by the Journal of Culture Collections.
4. Tables should be explanatory
enough, but as simple as possible. They should be typed double-spaced and
presented on a separate sheet of paper.
5. Figures (graphs, photographs,
etc.,) should be numbered consequently and presented on a separate sheet
of paper. Graphs may be drawn in black ink or computer-made. It is desirable
for the graphs to be accompanied by tables with the data used for their
preparation to
facilitate the presentation of the graphs for publication. Photographs
should be clear enough and have good contrast. Legends to the figures should
be grouped on a separate sheet of paper.
6. Latin binominals should
be typed in italic and in full when first cited, and further with abbreviated

with the International Measurement System (SI).
9. References should be
arranged in alphabetical order. Literature cited in the text should be
by numerals in square brackets. References should be arranged as follow:

10. Manuscripts should be
submitted on diskette also. It is preferable to prepare the materials on
MS Windows using program's Word, Excel, Paintbrush, Corel Draw or *.html
